Eva’s is proud to announce its involvement with the Shelter and Support Board Advocacy Coalition (SSBAC), an initiative dedicated to fostering systemic change and advancing the strategic goals of non-profit shelter and supportive housing organizations in Toronto. Our board chair, Aisha Francis, represents Eva’s in the critical work of this coalition and is actively contributing to shaping the sector’s future.

What is SSBAC?

Formed in 2023 by Fred Victor’s Board, the SSBAC is a collaborative network made up of Members (i.e., Board representatives from shelter and support sector agencies), as well as Partners (i.e., management representatives from agency associations).

Goals of SSBAC

SSBAC will address a gap in efforts to bring about systemic change by supporting the development of a common “Board led voice” for the sector.

Its goals include:

  1. Attainment of strategic plan objectives of each agency (e.g., fair wages for staff)
  2. Systemic change affecting the shelter and supportive housing sector
  3. Collaborations with sector non-profit Boards and associations

Why SSBAC Matters

One of SSBAC’s current advocacy priorities is achieving wage parity between agency workers and their counterparts in municipal and provincial roles. Frontline workers are the backbone of the shelter and housing system, and it is unjust and deeply disheartening that they face significant disparities despite their critical role in addressing homelessness.

“Wage parity is not just about fairness—it’s about sustaining the essential workforce addressing Toronto’s homelessness crisis,” says Eva’s Board Chair, Aisha Francis. “The SSBAC’s collaborative approach is a much-needed step toward meaningful, systemic change.”

Eva’s Commitment to Systemic Change

As a proud member of SSBAC, Eva’s is committed to supporting these advocacy efforts while advancing our own strategic objectives.

“The Coalition is a platform for collective action,” says Francis. “By uniting our voices and efforts, we can drive policy changes that ensure the long-term viability of the services we provide and the well-being of those who deliver them.”

Looking Ahead

The SSBAC is just beginning its journey to reshape the shelter and supportive housing sector. By fostering collaboration, addressing critical workforce challenges, and driving systemic reform, the Coalition represents a significant opportunity to create lasting impact.

Eva’s is honoured to be part of this groundbreaking initiative and will continue to champion the needs of both frontline workers and the youth we serve.
